New Course: Installation, Storage, and Compute with Windows Server 2016 (Exam 70-740)

CBT Nuggets trainer Garth Schulte recently released his new Installation, Storage, and Compute with Windows Server 2016 (Exam 70-740) course, completing a series of courses preparing you for the Microsoft MCSA: Windows Server 2016 certification. Garth addresses all of the concepts, terminology, and technology covered in Microsoft exam 70-740. And Garth developed virtual labs, giving you the opportunity to get hands-on practice for a complete learning experience.

In this 48-video course, Garth prepares you to masterfully administer Microsoft’s latest iteration of its popular Windows Server product, while also giving you the skills and knowledge to pass the 70-740 exam on your way to Microsoft certification.

We asked Garth about his new course and how you can get more out of your training.

Q: Why should companies train their IT professionals on Windows Server 2016? What value does Server 2016 bring to an organization and the IT pro?
A: Increased productivity for IT pros (PowerShell 5.x baby!) and more bells and whistles for everyone.

Q: Why should companies consider moving from Server 2012 to Server 2016? What advantages does the new iteration of Microsoft’s Server product offer?
A: Microsoft Windows Server 2016 improves on existing features and introduces quite a few new ones such as Containers and Nano Server to bring organizations into the next generation of tightly focused, autonomous, workload-driven computing.

Q: From a learner perspective, what did you keep in mind when creating this course?
A: I wanted to provide thorough coverage of the 70-740 exam with a structure that progresses naturally while building on previous concepts and technologies.

Q: Any out-of-the-box tips for learners to get the most out of your course?
A: The best tip I can offer is to follow along in the virtual lab! I made sure every Nugget includes a virtual lab so you can experience every technology Server 2016 has to offer.

Q: What was your favorite Nugget to create in this course?
A: Implement Stretch Clusters. Giving learners the opportunity to build a multi-site failover cluster with replicated iSCSI storage and an Azure cloud witness in a virtual lab is just epicly cool!

Q: What’s the most important thing you hope learners take away from this course?
A: I hope learners enjoy the learning experience and walk away with the confidence to conquer the 70-740 exam!

Q: What course(s) or certification(s) should learners complete before diving into your Installation, Storage, and Compute with Windows Server 2016 (Exam 70-740) course?
A: I recommend, but don’t require, that learners possess basic PowerShell knowledge and the CompTIA Network+ certification.

Q: What course(s) or certification(s) should learners look to jump into after they complete your Installation, Storage, and Compute with Windows Server 2016 (Exam 70-740) course?
A: 70-741: Networking with Windows Server 2016 and 70-742: Identity with Windows Server 2016 to complete the Windows Server 2016 MCSA certification. After learners earn the MCSA, they usually move on to the MCSE: Could Platform and Infrastructure certification.

Q: As learners prepare for the Microsoft 70-740 certification exam, what do you think are the toughest parts of the exam that they’ll face? How can they best prepare to conquer those challenges?
Hyper-V and Failover Clustering together make up more than half of the exam. The new compute features such as Nano Server, Containers, Storage Spaces Direct, and Storage Replica also make their debut on this exam. You’ll hear me say this in the course, but document the areas you aren’t 100 percent confident in using the exam blueprint and give those areas some extra lovin’!

Q: For learners who may not choose to take the exam, how does your course apply to the real world? How can learners directly apply what they learn to the workplace?
A: Learners who are not interested in the exam will benefit because they have the opportunity to get hands on with Windows Server 2016 in the virtual lab. All of that practice translates and prepares them for the real world, getting them ready to handle the day-to-day work of administering Server 2016.

Q: Around here, you have the reputation for being the King of the Virtual Lab. Why are virtual labs important to the learning experience?
A: Ha! I’ve never held a royal title, so thank you for that, my noble interviewer. Having a virtual lab environment to get hands-on experience and practice for the real world is crucial for the complete learning experience. Many folks just don’t have the time, finances, or know-how to build their own lab. Virtual labs remove all of these barriers. It still blows my mind that I can fire up a browser and within a few minutes have a full network of machines at my fingertips!

Q: Because we crowned you King of the Virtual Lab, how should learners approach the hands-on labs you created for your 70-740 course?
A: With reckless abandon! Seriously, you can learn and experiment at your own pace without fear of breaking things in this environment. Also, the labs become increasingly more involved as you go. So, by the end of the course, you’ll be remotely managing a network of GUI-less Windows Server 2016 machines all from a single Windows 10 workstation.

Q: You are a fan of Game of Thrones, which popularized the saying, “Winter is coming.” As the reigning King of the Virtual Lab, what is your house motto?
A: The House Virtual Labs motto would have to be “Brace yourself, Pa$$w0rd is coming.” (We even have our own house meme!)
